Andrew\, who has a blog that focuses on East Bay geology and is writing a book on the subject\, will take us on a 3.3-mile route with informative stops at Berkeley’s distinctive rock parks. We’ll explore vivid signs of past volcanic activity — thankfully\, no longer a threat! Along the way\, we’ll also encounter evidence of giants in the Earth: large active landslides\, the inexorable Hayward Fault\, and marks left by mammoths during the Ice Age when Berkeley was even more unusual than it is today. Expect stairways and some hilly streets\, which may be slippery with dead leaves.

DESCRIPTION:As tragic as the Napa/Sonoma/Santa Rosa wildfires were\, many areas of the Sonoma Valley were spared due to the low fuel load presence of the vineyards\, and they provide extremely valuable lessons for us. \nThe communities of the East Bay are the closest urban areas to natural areas with the rating of “highest wildfire risk” in the state\, hence the need for learning from the Sonoma Valley about what we can do and what we need to do. \n \nWe will have folks on hand beginning at 6 to answer questions and do some mentoring. \nWe also have some remaining inflatable solar Luci lights available: the Luci Original ($15) and the Luci EMRG ($10).  Please bring cash or check.

SUMMARY:Animal Disaster Preparedness and First Aid
DESCRIPTION:Jenny Wenk has been a Registered Veterinary Technician who worked in both private veterinary clinics and with East Bay Humane Society. She is a volunteer for Berkeley Animal Care Services and is the current Chair of the City’s Personnel Board. She has 3 totally adorable (most of the time) cats (as she describes them). She is a long time CERT volunteer\, so you may know her from all her emergency prep activities. \nHer presentation combines basic disaster prep for our animal companions with some simple first aid; she’ll also give some tips on dealing with wildlife. Her reason for developing this talk: \nWe love these animals. They are members of our families. We saw after Katrina that some people died rather than abandon their dogs or cats. I want to help as many people and animals as possible survive whatever Nature has in store for us. \nWe’ll be at our usual meeting place\, the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists (BFUU).  \nTime: 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the BFUU Fellowship Hall\, corner of Cedar and Bonita. And per usual\, we will have folks on hand beginning at 6 to answer questions and do some mentoring.

SUMMARY:Disaster Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:One of the most lasting and damaging effects of a disaster is the trauma to one’s mental and emotional health\, for those experiencing the disaster and to first responders. \nPost-disaster mental trauma can be substantial; one study estimates the prevalence of PTSD at 30–40% among direct victims\, 10–20% among rescue workers\, and 5–10% in the general population. \nCome learn about interventions to help disaster victims through a disaster\, including children. Learn how to become a more resilient responder by learning how to manage mental health trauma and PTSD. \nBarbara Morita is a retired Physician Assistant with 32 years of patient care in non-profit Community Health Centers in the East Bay. She brings direct medical disaster response experience to her presentations and weaves real response stories into the reasons for recommendations. Her disaster response experience includes Ground Zero/ World Trade Center\, Superdome/ Hurricane Katrina\, Haiti Earthquake\, Shelter support/ California wildfires\, and Indonesia after the great earthquake/ tsunami. \n\n\n\n[Come at 6pm if you’d like some mentoring!]

SUMMARY:BeCERTAINN: Repeater Radio Communications in a Disaster
DESCRIPTION:How do we communicate in a large-scale emergency when traditional systems have been disrupted? \nGeoff Lomax\, one of the co-founders of BeCERTAINN\, discusses an exciting new communication tool using “walkie talkies” for residents in the City of Berkeley. BeCERTAINN’s goal is to connect CERT Teams (neighborhood groups) to each other to improve our collective disaster response capacity and effectiveness. \nBeCERTAINN\, Berkeley CERT and Inter-Neighborhood Network is a city-wide amateur radio network designed to enable CERT Teams to communicate. BeCERTAINN combines General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) — a licensed radio service — with a radio repeater. The repeater is a combination of a radio receiver and a radio transmitter that enables CERT teams to receive and retransmit a signal from most locations in the City of Berkeley\, covering much larger areas than traditional 2-way radio communication. SUMMARY:City-wide Activation Drill (with BeCERTAINN)
DESCRIPTION:On May 4 (9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.) you can participate in a citywide (and beyond!) disaster drill! \nLocal disaster preparedness and emergency response teams will be conducting an “activation exercise.” Participants will include individuals\, neighborhood CERT teams\, and city-wide organizations involved in disaster response and preparedness. Participating individuals\, groups\, and organizations will have the opportunity to perform the following: \n\nReview and update their emergency response procedures\nPractice activating their emergency response plan(s)\nParticipate in exercises with other CERT groups and city-wide organizations\n\nSign up at the link below\, and email info@bdpnnetwork.org if you have questions or are interested in volunteering. Once you sign up\, we’ll send you scenarios that you can use to test how ready you\, your family\, your neighborhood\, or CERT team are to respond to a large-scale emergency. \nBecause this will be a city-wide (and beyond) drill\, we are providing a Google map (see below) that you can use to communicate with (in person) BeCERTAINN’s GMRS repeater radio group who’ll be participating as well. We’ll be practicing communicating both needs and available resources to a radio mesh. \nIf all of this sounds confusing\, fear not! SUMMARY:Surviving Wildfires!
DESCRIPTION:We have put together a panel of speakers to talk about steps you can take to prepare for and respond to a wildfire\, including an update on home fire insurance\, tailoring your evacuation checklist to your specific needs\, and tips on evacuation.  \nAfter a brief presentation from each of the following presenters\, there’ll be a Q&A session\, and a chance to personalize your own wildfire prep and evacuation plan. The panel consists of:  \n• Keith May of the Berkeley Fire Department will provide an update on Berkeley’s latest evacuation plans\, and provide a personal perspective of a community and wildfires. \n • Gradiva Couzin\, chair of the Disaster and Fire Safety Commission. Gradiva will provide the latest efforts and plans\, including warning sirens\, to better prepare Berkeley for a major wildfire. \n • Peter Meza from the State of California’s Department of Insurance will discuss changes in fire insurance. Peter has extensive experience handling consumer complaints against insurance carriers due to wildfire claims and has also worked in FEMA centers following major California fires. \n • Craig Hollis\, a Berkeley born firefighter from the Capay Valley Fire Department\, will discuss his first hand experience with wildfire evacuations.  \n• Representatives from the Grizzly Peak Hills group. This large neighborhood group recently ran an evacuation drill and will talk about their experience.  \n• Colleen Neff and Alina Constantinescu of the Berkeley Path Wanderers. They will be providing the latest info on the efforts to improve Berkeley’s many paths as a critical component of evacuation route options.  \nEach panelist will give a short presentation with an emphasis on what they consider to be their most important take-home message about responding to the risk of wildfires.
